WELCOME TO THE PATC

The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club...
is a volunteer-based organization, headquartered in Vienna, Virginia. The PATC was founded in 1927 by the visionaries who planned and built the Appalachian Trail. The club now manages more than 1,200 miles of hiking trails in the Mid-Atlantic region, along with cabins, shelters, and hundreds of acres of conserved land.

PATC volunteers contribute tens of thousands of hours of volunteer service every year. Volunteers maintain trails, cabins, and shelters, teach Leave No Trace principles to hikers and backpackers, publish maps and guidebooks, and help manage a busy headquarters operation. In addition to volunteer opportunities, the club offers a busy calendar of recreational events, including hikes, excursions, cross-country ski weekends, and mountaineering trips. The club is always in need of enthusiastic volunteers.

Please visit our HELP WANTED page to learn about currently available volunteer opportunities. Visit the NEWS page for updates concerning the club, our trails, and our trail partners. Register and log on to submit work reports for your volunteer efforts. Registered website users can also submit articles, links, blogs, and calendar events.

You're Invited! Join a PATC Volunteer Work Crew

PATC volunteers build and maintain trails, trailside shelters, and cabins.  Our crews are always looking for new members.  No experience is necessary.  You'll learn new skills, make an important contribution, and meet new friends.  Please consider joining a PATC volunteer work crew.  We'll be highlighting our crews in this space, over the next few months...

dc_crew1.jpgThe DC Crew performs trail work in Rock Creek Park in the District of Columbia.  We meet on Saturdays between April and November to work on projects from erosion control and re-routes to bridge construction.  All volunteers are welcome, either for a day or as regular participants.  No experience necessary.   We meet at the Nature Center in Rock Creek Park at 8:20 AM and carpool to the work site.  Check the calendar for upcoming trips. Volunteer of the Month - July 2010

July 2010 Volunteer of the Month – Dave Coover

dave_cooper_1.jpg

North Chapter member, Dave Coover, serves as overseer/co-overseer in Pennsylvania on 9 miles of trails on the Tuscarora and 3 miles on the AT. An avid birder and runner, Dave routinely runs his trail sections to make inspections.

“I really enjoy being able to oversee and give back to the trails that have given me so many memorable runs in the past,” Dave commented, on why he enjoys volunteering for PATC.

Dave’s trail work actually began about 10 years ago.  He and his wife and son were maintaining 4 or 5 local trails for DCNR in the Tuscarora State Forest (they now maintain 15 trails). In 2006 he cleared several blow downs on a section of the TT and reported them to District Manager, Pete Brown. Pete invited Dave to the next AT work trip, and the rest is history.

Dave’s birding skills are well known among North Chapter members. On monthly TT and AT work trips, Dave identifies numerous bird species from their calls and songs. On a recent TT trip, Dave explained that a strident “teacher-teacher” call was coming from the oven bird—a small warbler-type bird that builds its dome-shaped nest on the forest floor.

PATC greatly appreciates Dave’s work as a trail overseer and a frequent volunteer on North Chapter AT and TT work trips.
