The Blue and White Crew installed the last of the approximately 125 large, stone steps on the "Mather Side Trail", last weekend. The trail is a short, steep section that links to the AT (behind the NPS Stephen Mather Training Center) to the ATC Headquarters.
Many thanks to the variety of groups and individuals who made the project happen, after a long time in the planning phase. They include: the West Virginia Dept of Transportation (for footing the bill for stone, signs, etc.), REI (for a generous grant that allowed the PATC to buy the rock hammers, drills, wedges, etc. that were used to cut and shape the rock steps), ATC (for coordinating all of the paperwork, planning, and communications, and for providing Mid-Atlantic Crew labor), HAFE (for moving the stone to the work site and for their help with enabling volunteers to work in the architecturally/historically sensitive Park), and ATPO (for providing support, as well as a place to get out of the cold, last weekend). Individuals on the thank-you list include Bob Sickley (ATC), Karen Lutz (ATC), Laurie Potteiger (ATC), Steve Lowe (HAFE), Pam Underhill (ATPO), Pete Irvine (ATPO), Lester Kenway (Trail Services, Bangor, ME), John Hedrick (PATC Supervisor of Trails), and all of the volunteers who came out on multiple trips (ignoring weather forecasts) to make this project such a success.
The crew will return in the early Spring to install additional rip-rap, and to rebuild the short section of tread between the two upper staircases. The crew also plans to rebuild the steps (closest to the AT) sometime in the near future.
